Background:

Hetta Institute for International Development (HIID) is a USA-based professional educational corporation specializing in human capacity building. The Institute specializes in helping the mid and senior-level executives, particularly those from the developing countries, to upgrade their skills. HIID was founded in 2001 and registered with Arizona Corporation Commission, Phoenix, Arizona, USA. Course Description:

This course introduces participants to the concept of conflict management in the context of community development. Conflict management refers to the variety of ways people handle grievances – clashes of right and wrong. Conflict occurs at different levels. They can occur on a person- to- person level, within the workplace, families, local communities, within an organization, and at the international level. Conflicts occur when people, communities, organizations, and countries disagree because their needs, wants, goals, or values are different. Some tools have been developed to help us recognize different types of conflicts and how to deal with them. In this course, community liaison officers will learn some conflict resolution techniques to enhance productivity.

Course Learning Objectives:

This short course aims to enhance the skills and knowledge of program/project managers, liaison officers, and senior officials whose primary responsibilities are to resolve conflicts in their communities.

Course Content:

The course is delivered in a workshop setting facilitated by seasoned professional facilitators with practical experience. One session will be devoted to site visits to relevant institutions. Participants can expect that most of the course will entail their active input and participation as to issues treated. Lecturing will be on specific to the point issues that will enable participants to gain the practical skills and knowledge noted above.

  • Conflict prevention strategies
  • Basic styles of resolving conflict
  • The concept of the negotiation process and its elements – mediator, arbitrator, ombudsman
  • Case studies of conflicts resolution
  • Problem-solving exercises
  • Computer training with a brand new laptop computer to take home
  • Site visits.

Learning Outcome:

At the end of the session, participants are expected to:
  • Demonstrate the ability to apply their conflict management knowledge in the business setting and community liaison.
  • Understand why conflict management skills are important to community liaison officers.
  • Understand and distinguish different strategies for conflict management.
  • Be able to define and understand the negotiation process in resolving conflicts.

Learning Methodology:

This course combines lectures, class discussions and problem-solving. Each participant is expected to read and complete the assigned materials. The course is delivered in a workshop setting facilitated by seasoned professional facilitators with practical experience. Active participation is required and key to the success of the workshops. Other methods used in this course include case studies and problem-solving exercises. Assessment of participant’s performance will be measured through effective class participation, group presentation, group project, and class attendance. This course combines presentations, lectures, class discussions, group presentation, and problem-solving exercises.
